Stay vacated on election of Panchayat chiefs

Last Updated 30 June 2014, 20:34 IST

The High Court on Monday vacated the stay on electing presidents and vice presidents for the Taluk and Zilla Panchayats in the State.

The Court passed the orders after the petitioners - some aspirants for the posts - submitted that a petition related to rotation of reservation for the two posts was pending before the Supreme Court.

The petitioners contended that the court cannot stay the elections as the calendar of events had been announced as per the Karnataka Panchayat Raj Act. Justice L Narayanaswamy vacated the stay.

Daily hearing

The High Court has directed day-to-day hearing of the petition by sugar factories challenging the order of the government to book criminal cases against them for refusing to pay the sugar cane price determined by the government.

During the hearing of an appeal by the sugar companies, a division bench comprising Chief Justice  D H Waghela and Justice H G Ramesh directed the State government not to book any criminal case against sugar companies until the matter is disposed of.

Packaged drinking water

The High Court has directed all the deputy commissioners in the State to furnish details of packaged drinking water units in their respective jurisdiction.
