Last Updated 30 June 2014, 21:35 IST

The state archaeology department is carrying out the documentation of 155 heritage sites in the Capital. The initiative has been taken to check on the current status of these sites.

The project is being carried out in association with the Indian National Trust For Art and Cultural Heritage (INTACH).

“This is a major attempt to identify the current status of these sites. In total, 155 heritage sites will be documented. Once the documentation process is over, we will try to identify a number of heritage sites which we can bring under the department’s ambit.

Those sites can then be labelled as state-protected,” said a top official of the state
archaeology department.

Currently, there are 19 sites protected by the department.

The documentation process which is in progress is also running a check on 150 sq m area around the monument.

“Most of the sites in this project have not been documented before. A majority of the monuments are not in good shape. So far, 100 sites have been documented,” said Ajay Kumar, project director, Delhi Chapter, INTACH.

With 55 sites left to be documented, the final report will be submitted in the next two months.

Meanwhile, the department has planned a major revamp of Mehrauli Archaeological Park. There are 21 listed and several other non-listed monuments inside the park.

While six of the listed monuments are ASI protected, 15 come under the state archaeology department.

The survey and documentation work has been completed in 11 monuments with work on four other monuments going on.

Eight of the 15 monuments have been encroached upon.

Three such monuments have been turned into mosques under the patronage of Delhi Wakf Board with prayers being offered there. The land on which these monuments are located belongs to DDA.

The state archaeology department has informed the DDA to clear the encroachments and deploy security guards at the sites.

The conservation work of six sites has already been started in collaboration with INTACH.
