Man strangles wife over suspicion of love affair

Suspecting his 26-year-old wife of indulging in an extramarital affair, a 28-year-old man allegedly strangled her at north-east Delhi’s Gokulpuri. Police are on the man’s trail after he revealed about the murder to the victim’s sworn brother while escaping.

The murder came to light after the landowner of the flat the couple was staying in received no response despite making several phone calls to them. He visited on Monday morning to find it locked from outside.

Finding it suspicious, he informed police after which a team arrived at the spot and broke open the door. Inside, Phoolmuni was lying dead.

There were no external injury marks on her body and police suspect she was strangled.
The body has been preserved at a mortuary and police said the exact manner in which she was killed could be ascertained only after a post-mortem is conducted.

Investigations revealed that accused Bablu Murmur, employed with a toy factory, had been to Ghaziabad after the alleged murder.

Bablu’s brother Tannu lives there with another person Sanjay Hembram and both work as gardeners at CBI Training Centre.

“It was Hembram who had been informed by Bablu about the murder. Since Bablu was a regular visitor to their residence, he and Hembram became friends. Soon Phoolmuni became the sworn sister of Hembram and the couple shared their personal problems with him,” a police officer told Deccan Herald.

As Hembram got closer to Bablu, he learnt that the couple fought often.

“Hembram has said Bablu suspected his wife of cheating him by being in a relationship with another man. That led to frequent fights between the couple,” said the officer.

Hembram was informed of yet another quarrel between the couple over the same issue about two weeks ago.

“Since Tannu and Bablu did not interact much with each other, Hembram stepped in and solved the issue for the time being. But Phoolmuni had told him that she feared for her life,” the officer added.

After the murder, Bablu went to meet Hembram in Ghaziabad where he told him that he had killed his wife following a quarrel over her suspected extramarital affair.

Hembram has claimed that he tried to stop Bablu from fleeing, but in vain.

Based on Hembram’s statements, police have registered a case of murder against Bablu and launched a manhunt for him.

Hailing from Katihar in Bihar, Phoolmuni and Bablu were married about two years ago.
They had a son who died a few months ago.

Since the marriage was solemnised less than seven years ago, the case has been referred to a sub-divisional magistrate to investigate.
