Last Updated 04 July 2014, 19:51 IST

Following crackdown on errant autorickshaw drivers, Department of Legal Metrology has penalised over 400 autorickshaws with Rs 500 each in the past two weeks.

According to officials, those auto rickshaws coming to get their meters calibrated are also being levied Rs 500 over and above the fee for calibration of their meters, with the deadline having expired on June 19.

The drive, a department official said, would continue to ensure all autos ply with validated meters.

About 40,000 auto rickshaws continue to ply without calibrated meters in City, the official added.

Likewise, in a drive against autorickshaws, traffic police booked 5,582 auto drivers and seized 559 autos the past three days for different violations.

The Bangalore City Traffic Police have planned a second drive to identify autorickshaw drivers violating norms and taking stern action against them.

“We have received complaints specifying locations where there are a lot of violations. We will be concentrating on those locations,” Additional Commissioner of Police (Traffic & Security) B Dayananda said.

Demanding excess fare and refusing to ply to specific destinations are major complaints which the second drive would specifically concentrate, he added.

The department has pressed 700 policemen, in civil attire, into service for the drive.

The drivers will have to appear before the court, pay fine of Rs 3,000 besides giving an affidavit promising not to repeat the offence.
