Armed men on a motorcycle allegedly robbed a 50-year-old man of jewellery and cash worth over Rs 55 lakh on Sunday night.

The jeweller had kept a bag containing jewellery by his side while he was downing the shutters of his shop when the robbers struck.

The incident took place around 8.15 pm on Sunday on Thana Road in Bhajanpura. Jeweller Manoj Jain usually left all the silver jewellery at the shop every night and carried home gold items and the cash.

On Sunday he did the same, carrying home gold jewellery worth Rs 55 lakh and about Rs 25,000 in cash in a bag.

While he was downing the shutters, two men arrived there, picked up the bag and tried to flee. Jain tried to pull back the bag from them, but was pushed away.

Some locals noticed the due fleeing gave chase. The robbers, who till then appeared to be unarmed, allegedly pulled out a pistol. The pillion-rider kept the weapon pointed at the local people as the two sped away. Suffering from poor health, Jain was helped to the Bhajanpura police station only a few hundred metres away by the locals.

Police have registered a case and started investigations.

They, however, were unable to obtain much information about the robbers.

Neither Jain nor the others was able to note down the registration number of the motorcycle.

They were also not certain about the appearance of the robbers, said a police officer.

“We suspect it was the work of people who knew Jain quite well. They appeared to know what time he leaves the shop, what jewellery he carries home and that he is generally alone at that point of time every day,” the officer told Deccan Herald.

Jain lives with his wife and children in the same area.
