It was a case of life imitating art, but did not end well for the imitator this time.

Inspired by films of Malayalam superstar Suresh Gopi, a 38-year-old unemployed man posed as a Central Bureau of Intelligence (CBI) officer to seek out the details of his girlfriend, who had fled from Kerala after borrowing Rs 1 lakh from him. Gopi is noted for his leading roles as CBI and police officers.

The accused has been identified as Saji Kumar, who hails from Kerala’s Pathanamthitta district. The police said his girlfriend works as a nurse with a super-speciality hospital in Gurgaon.

“Saji used to work as a cook at hotels in Kerala, and his girlfriend had asked him to come to Delhi for better job opportunities. She had also borrowed Rs 1 lakh from Saji last year, but failed to return it,” said Ravindra Yadav, Additional Commissioner of Police (Crime).

After a few months, when Saji began to demand the money back, the woman stopped answering his calls.

Saji was fond of watching Malayalam films, from where he got the idea of posing as a CBI officer. “Saji purchased an IPS officer’s uniform from Hyderabad and came to Delhi in search of his girlfriend,” added Yadav.

Saji used to wear the uniform and pose as “Ajith Kumar”, an Inspector General of Police with the CBI. He approached the authorities at the hospital where his girlfriend was employed and asked for her details, claiming that an enquiry was being conducted against her. Though Saji used the data to meet his girlfriend, no complaint was made with police.

He was busted only after a complaint was filed by the owner of a hotel in south Delhi’s INA on Friday. George Kutty reported that a man came to his hotel claiming to be a CBI officer and directed him to employ his twin brother as a cook.

“George was forced to employ Saji, who was offered a salary of Rs 16,000 per month,” said Yadav.

Saji was arrested by a Crime Branch team from Taimoor Nagar in south-east Delhi on Friday. Other incidents of impersonation by Saji are being verified.
