He was speaking at the valedictory of the Bangalore City Police Annual Sports Meet at the City Armed Reserve (CAR) South ground at Adugodi.

“It is a tough task to serve in the police department. The policemen can deliver results only when they maintain good physical health. Hence, the government is thinking of starting gymnasium centres at all important cities to help the policemen to work out everyday,” he said.

Indirectly referring to the police lathicharge on farmers recently at Chamarajnagar and Davangere, the Minister advised the policemen not to worry about certain incidents reported while maintaining law and order. “Some vested interests are targeting the police without any reason. During recent incidents, the police acted as per law. Hence, they need not pay attention to such criticism,” the Minister added.

The government had equipped the police department with sophisticated weapons and arms to control terrorist activities. Amount for police welfare fund would be increased from Rs 50 lakh to Rs 1 crore in the coming budget, Acharya promised.

The Bangalore City police top the list in the state in terms of performance. During the past few years, responsibilities of the City police had increased manifold due to expansion of the City’s outskirts. Hence, the police should work with more dedication and determination, he averred.
