Pulikeshinagar Police on Thursday arrested one more accused, the last of the five, in the rape of a postgraduate student inside a car in Cox Town recently. The accused Shafiq Mohammad (27) is a resident of Pillanna Garden.

Naming Shafiq as the second accused in the case, police said he was one among five, including the main accused Nasir Hyder, with the victim in the car on the night of July 11.

A senior police official said Shafiq had snatched the watch from the victim’s male friend before dropping them near Cox Town.

“The victim and her male friend have identified Shafiq. The investigation has revealed that all the five accused were known to each other. They will be in police custody for next three days,” DCP (East) Sateesh Kumar said.

Police said Shafiq was a used car dealer and disowned by his family following differences over his marriage. Since he was not in touch with his family members, it took time for the police to track him down.

A senior police official said he frequently changed his sim card and kept in touch with select friends. The special team formed by Bangalore East Division managed to arrest him from the City outskirts.

Police said the main accused Nasir Hyder and his friends Mohammed Hafeez, Shoaib Sheikh Mohammad, Mohammed Ishaq Soud, Shoaib Sheik Mohammad and Sahfiq Mohammad will be interrogated together for the next three days. The formal identification parade of all the accused will be conducted soon.

The incident happened on the night of July 11 when the victim, a PG student, was chatting with her male friend outside her apartment in Fraser Town. The accused who had come in a car abducted the girl and her male friend.

The male friend was made to sit in the other car, while the four accused drove with the victim. They drove around for over an hour and the main accused Nasir Hyder allegedly raped the victim. They later, robbed the male friend, snatching his wallet and wrist watch.
