Candlelight vigil at 24 places against rape at Vibgyor school

Last Updated 02 August 2014, 20:19 IST

A number of parents and concerned citizens participated in candlelight vigils, held across 24 locations in the City on Saturday, demanding justice for the minor girl who was raped at Vibgyor High in Marathahalli.

A small group of around 15 volunteers were huddled closely near the Chinnaswamy Stadium in MG Road at around 9 pm. While most were young working professionals, there were two or three parents and two schoolchildren. Shreyas Niran, a young working member of the group was of the opinion that citizens come together only at the time of crisis. “There is a need to do more to stop such incidents,” he said.

Keerthana, a class 9 student of The Valley School and Thangam, a class 10 student of Mallya Aditi School, were the two youngest of the group at MG Road. “The City has become extremely unsafe for girls and children. When my brother is allowed to do all sorts of things, it is not the same for me. Why so?,” asked Keerthana. Some locations, like HSR Layout and JP Nagar, saw as many as 60 volunteers, while at others places, like at Adugodi, not many turned up. According to Vinay, a parent whose child studies at Vibgyor High, 300 parents gathered at the school for the vigil.

The vigil was also observed in other places like Banashankari, Jayanagar, BTM layout, Kumaraswamy Layout, Sarjapur, Rajajinagar, and Bomanhalli.
