England displace Aus from perch

With Parupalli Kashyap picking up India’s final piece of gold, the country ended in fifth spot on the medals table at the 20th Commonwealth Games.

India had a tally of 15 gold, 20 silver and 19 bronze for a total of 64 medals, placing them behind England, Australia, Canada and Scotland.

It was a far cry from their haul in New Delhi 2010, when they finished second with 39 gold, 26 silver and 36 bronze for a total of 101 medals.

But several of India’s medal events had been taken off the programme in Glasgow, hitting their prospects hard. Pairs events in shooting, Greco-Roman wrestling, archery and tennis weren’t on the programme and considering that, it was a decent show by the Indian sportspersons this time.

Meanwhile, England displaced Australia from the top of the medals table for the first time since 1986. The Englishmen finished with a tally of 58 gold, 59 silver and 57 bronze for a total of 174 medals. Australia, placed second, had 49 gold, 42 silver and 46 bronze for 136 medals.
