It's College Chalo time for women in Gujarat

The Gujarat government’s new initiative could be music to the ears of women who have not been able to complete their studies for some reason or the other in the past.

Under the state government’s Chalo College (Lets go to college) programme, launched on Monday, women who have quit studies after Higher Secondary or first year of college need not regret as they now have the chance to go back to college for further studies.

Designed on the lines of the government's programme of shala praveshotsav (school enrolment) for children, it is intended to help women  fulfill their educational aspirations.

Under the initiative 1,600 Arts, Commerce and Science colleges across the state will offer their vacant seats to women who are ready to give themselves a second chance at education.   The help of college principals, mamlatdars, collectors, NGOs and village elders will be sought for enrolment of women students.

Speaking on the initiative, A U Patel, Advisor, Knowledge Consortium of Gujarat said, “Due to social pressures, in many communities girls are forced to give up education. This initiative will give them a second chance.”

Patel said the initiative is on till August 8 and until such time the families of such women dropouts will be contacted and impressed upon the importance of higher education for women.

The praveshotsav committee will convince elders on the need for higher education for girls and ensure that the numbers are encouraging, especially on the last day which will also be the orientation day.

The day has also been designated as Women Teachers’ Day by the state government. The second time lucky students will be oriented about various facilities they should avail at the college, including library and laboratory in science colleges.
