Boat capsizes in Ganga, 17 feared dead

At least 17 people, including women and children, are feared dead after a boat carrying them capsized on Tuesday in the swollen waters of the Ganga in Uttar Pradesh’s Varanasi district, about 275 km from here.

The mishap occurred when around 40 people, residents of the Bhitawar village in the district, were crossing the river in an old boat, police sources said.

Varanasi District Magistrate Pranjal Yadav said that 22 people have been saved, adding that one body had been fished out from the river while 17 others were still missing.

A team of divers from the National Disaster Relief Force has been pressed into service to trace the remaining bodies. “We are trying to locate the bodies....nets are being used downstream,” Yadav said.

Sources said that the boat was overcrowded, which could be one of the reasons for the tragedy. The water level of the Ganga has risen sharply in the past few days.
