Couple held for illegal custody of girl

The Koramangala police have arrested the founding partner and advisor of a private firm and his wife for keeping a minor girl in illegal custody.

The suspects, Nikunj Todi and Nafisa, 33, residents of St John’s Wood Apartment near Forum Mall, allegedly assaulted the 13-year-old causing injuries all over her body.

The victim, said to be critical, is under going treatment at Victoria Hospital, police said.

“Nikunj Todi and Nafisa have been booked under IPC Sections 341 (wrongful restraint), 370 (buying or disposing of any person as a slave), 326 (voluntarily causing grievous hurt by dangerous weapons or means), 372 (selling minor for purposes of prostitution) and Section 23 of the Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Act, 2000, (cruelty to juvenile or child). They are being interrogated,” DCP (South-East) Rohini Katoch Sepat said. “The police hope to record the statement once the girl recovers.”

The victim, an orphan, was staying with her grandmother in Darjeeling in June. The couple brought her to Bangalore as maid. They were angry with her as she would steal food and suspected her when some money went missing.

The victim suffers from seizures. She was rushed to Blossom Hospital in an unconscious state on Friday. She was taken to Nimhans from where she was moved to Victoria Hospital.

There were wounds on her body. The couple told the police the girl had an itching problem and would hurt herself. They were forced to tie her hands and legs to prevent her from injuring herself, they said.

“The couple have been sent to police custody and the doctors advised the police against recording the statement of the victim on Saturday. The police are making efforts to contact the grandmother of the victim. The victim is recovering and the doctors are constantly monitoring her situation," said a senior police officer.
