As part of its e-district project, the Delhi government is planning to accept marriage certificate applications online and deliver the official document to the newly-weds through email.

A pilot project on hassle-free delivery of marriage certificate will begin in the north district by the month-end, said a senior official of the revenue department.

At present, couples need to visit the sub-divisional magistrate’s office to personally to file documents, collect the certificate and also for seeking additional copies of the document.
“Under the e-district project, the emailed marriage certificate could be printed for as many times as needed and used as copies of the original,” said an official.

Sources in the office of Chief Secretary S K Srivastava said the software for accepting online applications and delivery of marriage certificate has already been developed and tested.

Staff in the office of Principal Secretary (Revenue) Dharam Pal is maintaining a close watch on the progress in the e-marriage certificate initiative.

“Apart from giving marriage certificates through email, the same software would be used to provide 26 other certificates that are issued by the revenue department in each district,” said an official.

The newly-wed couples would only need to click on the website of the revenue department and apply for a marriage certificate online.

“The data bank of the department is linked to the Aadhar card and on entering details of the Aadhar number the entire information would appear on the form,” said an official.

An applicant would need to upload copies of the documents required for the process. On successful uploading of the documents like – birth certificates, photographs of marriage, details related to the marriage venue or invitation card – the software would generate an SMS that would be received in the applicants’ mobile phone.

For the physical verification of documents and signature of the couple before the SDM, the applicants would need to visit to the revenue department office once.

“To make the visit hassle-free, the applicant will get an opportunity to seek an online appointment in the SDM’s office,” said an official.
