Demand for Rs 2,500 per tonne of sugarcane intensifies

The district unit of the Raitha Sangha has decided to launch an indefinite dharna, and also a Jail Bharo stir, demanding Rs 2,500 per tonne of sugarcane, from August 13, in front of Sir M Visvesvaraya statue on the Bangalore-Mysore highway, here.

The decision was taken at the executive committee meeting of the Sangha, in the city, on Tuesday. Sangha president Konasale Narasaraju said, the dharna will be held from morning till evening to start with.

Later, there will be overnight dharnas. If the government does not announce Rs 2,500 for sugarcane, a Jail Bharo stir will be held on August 18, he added.

He opposed the announcement of Rs 2,200 per tonne of sugarcane by Chairman of Mysore Sugar Company and Cooperative Minister H S Mahadev Prasad and urged the private sugar factories to announce their price.
