Man's affair abets wife's suicide

Her family alleges husband had illicit relations with his own sister

On Raksha Bandhan, a 21-year-old woman committed suicide in west Delhi’s Uttam Nagar over her husband’s alleged physical relationship with his younger sister.
Police have arrested her husband while her sister-in-law is absconding.

Victim Priyanka lived with her husband Joginder Jindal, 24, and 11-month-old daughter Piu at Jeevan Park in Uttam Nagar.

Police said Priyanka was found hanging from the ceiling fan of her bedroom on Sunday.

Priyanka’s mother Beena told Deccan Herald that Priyanka had seen Joginder in a compromising position with his younger sister Hemal on numerous occasions in the last two years.

“It led to frequent heated arguments between the couple which forced Priyanka to kill herself.

We never believed what Priyanka claimed. Currently, we just feel that she would have been alive if we trusted what she claimed,” Beena said.
Going by Priyanka’s family, there have been similar tragedies earlier in her in-laws family.

Hemal’s husband attempted suicide over the same issue about six months back. Joginder’s mother committed suicide several years back over her husband’s extramarital relationship.

Priyanka had an arranged marriage around three years ago with Joginder, who runs a construction material business. She was initially happy with her married life.
But Joginder and Hemal allegedly began torturing her after six to seven months when she caught them in a compromising position for the first time. Priyanka told her family that she was then regularly abused and beaten up by Joginder and Hemal.

“Priyanka used to inform us that instead of sleeping in her bed, Joginder would choose to sleep with Hemal. Joginder and Hemal were involved in an illicit relationship due to which our daughter had to face constant mental harassment,” her uncle Pankaj added.

Beena further claimed that she and her husband Satya Prakash wanted to intervene in the matter, but Priyanka always told them that she would solve it herself.
Priyanka also confronted Joginder over the issue when they went to Priyanka’s parents’ house at Rajnagar Part 2 in south Delhi’s Palam last Friday.

“A heated argument took place during which Joginder lost his patience and threatened to shoot Priyanka dead. He was furious with what Priyanka claimed. The argument took place in the presence of me and my husband,” Beena said. Then around 4.30 pm on Sunday, Priyanka’s family was informed that she committed suicide.

The call was made by Priyanka’s father-in-law Jayabhagwan, who also informed that she had told Joginder that she had decided to commit suicide.

A case of abetment of suicide under section 306 of the Indian Penal Code has been filed with Palam police station. Joginder, Hemal and Jayabhagwan have been named as the accused.

Police are yet to take any action against Jayabhagwan.

“Priyanka’s body was handed over to her family after a post-mortem at Deen Dayal Upadhyay Hospital. Since she died within seven years of her marriage, an SDM enquiry has also been initiated. Her family members have been questioned,” said a police officer.
