IPS officer accused in Sohrabuddin encounter case reinstated

Jailed for four years in the Sohrabuddin Sheikh fake encounter case, IPS officer  Abhay Chudasma who had been out on bail, has been reinstated by the Gujarat government in the vigilance squad.

Prior to Chudasma another IPS officer, G L Singhal  had also been reinstated.   Singhal was an accused in the Ishrat Jahan fake encounter case.

Chudasma will now be posted as the Superintendent of Police of the Vigilance Squad in the DGP’s office. It may be recalled that Chudasma, a 1999 batch IPS officer, was arrested by the CBI in 2010, for his alleged involvement in  the killing of Sheikh and his wife Kauserbi.

Allegations leveled by the CBI against him was his role in arranging arms for the fake encounter.  He was, however, was  granted bail by the Bombay High Court in April this year after his bail plea was rejected several times by the lower courts. Chudasma had been applying for bail on health grounds.

Apart from Chudasma, the other IPS officers  who are out on bail in the Sohrabuddin  case include IPS officer Rajkumar Pandian and Dinesh M N of the Rajasthan cadre. Meanwhile, the main accused D G Vanzara continues to be in jail and has already retired from service this year while in jail.
