Schoolchildren take ill after eating tainted sweets on I-Day

Hundreds of schoolchildren took ill in Soro in north Odisha’s Balasore district and Uttar Pradesh’s Kanpur district on Friday after consuming tainted sweets distributed during the Independence Day celebrations at their schools.

All have been admitted to a various hospitals, with some of them in a serious condition.
 Reports reaching here from Balasore said students gathered for Independence Day celebrations at the local school and consumed sweets distributed after the function by the authorities. They felt uneasy soon after eating the sweet and were immediately rushed to the health centre.

The condition of 50 out of the 200 students is stated to be critical. Local administration in Balasore and the police have begun a probe into the incident.

In Lucknow “laddoos” had been bought from a local sweet shop and distributed among the children of four primary schools in the Chaubepur locality of the district for Independence Day left hundreds of children ill.

The children complained of stomach pain soon after eating the laddoos and were rushed to a nearby community health centre. They were referred to city hospitals in Kanpur after their condition worsened, sources said.
