BIAL lying, says House Committee chairman

Last Updated 21 December 2009, 17:59 IST

Speaking to the media after tabling the report of the House Committee on BIAL in the Assembly, he charged the BIAL with “lying” and compared the airport promoter to a car driver who tries to squeeze in as many passengers, despite the seating capacity being only five.

“The project passenger traffic was four million in 2008, when the airport opened. Despite increase in number of passengers thereafter, there has not been an increase in capacity. Then CEO of BIAL, Albert Brunner had announced the construction of a mirror terminal at low cost by December 2009. The present CEO has refused to recall his predecessor’s commitment. The year is coming to a close and where is this terminal?” Sagar asked.

He remarked further: “Only cosmetic changes have been effected. It is clear that the management at BIAL has uttered lies. The present terminal building is saturated because of it being designed under capacity. Available space has been over utilised for commercial purposes. Government control over the affairs of the airport has to be brought in,” Dr Sagar added.

Other recommendations of the committee  include naming the airport after Kempegowda, the chieftain builder of Bengaluru; appointing an Indian as the CEO of BIAL who can understand the local ethos and a team of government officers and technical experts to review deficiencies.
