Lieutenant Governor Najeeb Jung on Friday announced a two-fold increase in Delhi’s budgetary allocation for sports.

The current budget of Rs 22 crore will now be Rs 44 crore.

The LG also nominated Commonwealth Games gold medallist and star wrestler Sushil Kumar as the new brand ambassador of Delhi.

At a function to felicitate the CWG medal winners at Delhi Secretariat, the LG handed over cheques to the players of Delhi.

“From the last Olympic games, India is progressing. Now, we should do whatever is possible for sports. We don’t have any shortage of talent. There might have been a crisis of equipment and modern training, but it is now our responsibility for betterment of sports,” Jung said.

Jung also emphasised on providing spaces for sports in the city. “Somebody told me that there is a space in Delhi University also for sports. I told that person that I will talk to the DU vice-chancellor regarding this. The facilities for sports are short and the population is huge. We should do whatever can be done for sports,” he said.

“You may like sports and you cannot become a champion but you should play because if you are playing regularly, your children and the younger generation will be inspired,” he added.

Gold medal winning wrestlers at Glasgow CWG, 2014, Sushil Kumar, Yogeshwar Dutt and Amit Dahiya were awarded with cheques of Rs 14 lakh each. Cheques of Rs 8 lakh each were distributed to silver medal winners Bajrang Kumar, Rajiv Tomar and Shreyasi Singh.

Rs 6 lakh each was awarded to Manavjit Sandhu and Pawan Kumar who brought home bronze medals.

“These sportspersons have proved that even with limited financial support, the country can perform better in sports. The humility of these sportspersons is a class apart as juniors can learn a lot from them as their role models. In the days to come, we hope to continue our journey of winning more and more medals and keep the tricolour flying high,” Jung added.
