After being strip-searched by her teacher,  a sixth standard student of a private girls’ school in Uttar Pradesh’s Kanpur town committed suicide by hanging herself at her house in Brahma Nagar.

On Friday, her physical education teacher Rama Kanti suspected that the girl was carrying a mobile phone, which was against school rules.

Subsequently, the teacher strip-searched the girl and confiscated her phone. According to her mother, the girl was “upset” when she came home from school that day and went straight to her room after narrating the incident.

Her parent’s found her body hanging from the ceiling fan on Saturday. Reports said that angry residents in the locality held demonstrations in front of the school later, demanding strict action against the teacher concerned as well as the principal.

A case was then registered at the Nazirabad police station in this regard. Meanwhile, the school management admitted that a cell phone was confiscated, but denied that the girl had been strip-searched. “We have clear rules. No student is allowed to bring a cell phone to school,” said the principal Usha Devi.
