Organic cotton T-shirts, recycled carton bags at Green Bazaar

The seventh edition of the Green Bazaar that was organised here on Sunday saw a number of innovative and environment-friendly products being showcased at the event.

Some of them were T-shirts made of organic cotton and carry bags made of recycled cartons and clothes.

Alarmed at the growing cases of farmer suicides in the country, a group of three young men from the City decided to do their small bit to try and reverse this trend. Out of this sentiment was born a startup that aimed at popularising the use of organic cotton by making trendy T-shirts with social and political messages.

“We have vendors that source pure organic cotton from farmers in Tirupur in Tamil Nadu and the prints on the T-shirts are made using organic water colours. We hope that our initiative would give these farmers a better livelihood,” said Avishek Kataria, one of the co-founders of the startup.

A number of such T-shirts were lapped at the event.

Another stall that was busy throughout the day was that of Vidya Ramamurthy, who started her handicrafts venture two-and-a-half years ago. “We use old cartons to make carry bags and book marks, and use sarees to make pouches and hand bags. Business has been going good,” said Vidya.

What’s more, she has only three women helping her out in her venture, one of whom is her own maid. “My helpers come from a very poor background and this is a good means of earning some extra cash for their livelihood,” she added.

A demonstration on how to recycle waste, and various activities on the merits of recycling were conducted for school children during the programme.
