Elaborating on the scope and problems facing the manufacturing sector, Commissioner of Industrial Development, Government of Karnataka, M Maheshwar Rao, on Thursday said that the state government plans to concentrate on improving infrastructure in Tier II and III cities of the state to spread the benefits of equitable development.

Speaking at a ‘Karnataka Manufacturing Summit - 2014’ organised by Assocham, Rao said, “If we improve infrastructure in Tier II and III cities, the state as a whole can progress, as there are untapped resources in those areas.”

“The state government has recognised that the manufacturing sector is paramount for inclusive growth and hopes to capitalise on it,” he added.

On availability of skilled labour, he said, “Labour conditions in the state are slightly better; however, there is scope for improvement and we are planning to bring in more incubation centres and boost quality of skills development.”

While acquiring land, firms should keep in mind the various rules that govern land acquisition in the state to avoid problems later, he said.

“The state government is also planning to earmark portions of land that can be acquired by firms to allow easy acquisition,” he said.

He assured investors that the government is working on improving the E-Udyog which is expected to be fully functional in 6-12 months.
