With the State government dithering over formulating an Act to reduce the weight of school bags, a section of concerned citizens have decided to take a delegation to Primary and Secondary Education Minister Kimmane Ratnakar in Bangalore.

A decision to this effect was taken at the meeting organised by People’s Legal Forum, at Srujana Foundation, Saraswatipuram, in the city.

The meeting, presided over by the former Vice-chancellor Prof P Ventakaramaiah, resolved to exert pressure on the State government to introduce the Act, based on the Bill on Weight of School Bags presented in Rajya Sabha in 2006.

That apart, it was decided to take legal recourse by filing a public interest litigation (PIL) in the high court, with PLF that has been in the forefront in the interest of children, asked to make related preparations.

The meeting was also attended by the former Joint Director of Education A S Ramappa, Managing Trustee of Pratham, NGO, Ashwini Ranjan, mathematician S N Gananath, educationist Durai Krishnan, M Shashidhar of Socialist Unity Centre of India (SUCI), Director of PLF P P Baburaj among others.
