Hectic lobbying for Mayoral post

Last Updated 01 September 2014, 20:21 IST

As the race for the Mayoral post hots up, hectic lobbying has become the order of the day.

While the ruling BJP has reportedly decided to give new faces a chance, BJP corporators, City MPs and MLAs have been lobbying intensively for the past 15 days to nominate candidates of their choice.

A section of MLAs and corporators is backing JP Park corporator Nanjundappa, projecting him as the Vokkaliga face in the BBMP Council. Some others are supporting Moodalapalya corporator Shantha Kumari.

Just when the candidature had zeroed in on these two corporators, some BJP corporators and even the City incharge Minister, Ramalinga Reddy, are said to be supporting Geetha Srinivas Reddy.

Reports from the BJP headquarters suggest that this time around, the Mayoral election will spring surprises.

“The new Mayor could be a dark horse,” said a senior BJP functionary, requesting anonymity. According to him, there are two more names doing the rounds. One is Geetha Shashikumar of Attur ward and G Manjunath.

About Geetha, the source said, her educational qualification of MBBS and her stint as the chairperson of Health standing committee are being taken into consideration, while Manjunath's organisational work in the City BJP unit weighs in his favour for the top post in the BBMP. These two names are specially considered in view of BBMP elections next year.

“Preference this time is for an educated candidate or the with good organisational skills, for the top job,” said the source.
