House committee proposes rooftop swimming pool for legislators

The Legislators’ House Committee has proposed a rooftop swimming pool at the proposed housing complex for the legislators.

The proposal came up during the meeting of the committee held on Thursday. The Public Works Department, when questioned on the viability by the panel chairman N H Shivashankar Reddy, is learnt to have stated that swimming pool could be accommodated if it it was included in the planning stage itself.

Accordingly, instructions were given to incorporate swimming poll and submit the plan for ratification. The new building where 50 flats are proposed to be constructed, is estimated to cost Rs 35 crore.

When contacted, Reddy said that the swimming pool was just a suggestion. “A few members asked for its incorporation and there is nothing concrete as yet,” he said.

Star hotel at Belgaum

Meanwhile, the old plan of constructing a star hotel for legislators at Belgaum, to attend legislature session annually, has been revived.

The decision will be taken shortly, when Speaker Kagodu Thimmappa visits Belgaum for inspecting the preparations for the winters session of the legislature.

Long standing demand

House Committee Chairman and Deputy Speaker N H Shivashankar Reddy said there was a long standing demand for construction of a Legislators’ House (LH) in Belgaum.

“However, constructing housing facility exclusively for legislators is a burden on the State exchequer. Accordingly, we are mooting a proposal to invite private players to construct a hotel on government land. The project will be on PPP model with the government owning the land. While the hotel will be made available for legislators during Belgaum session, during other months private players can open it for tourists visiting the City,” Reddy said.
