Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Saturday said that the compensation received from the Central Relief Fund for natural disasters for crop losses due to floods was meagre.

“I will discuss in the Cabinet on releasing additional amount to the farmers,” he said.

Speaking with mediapersons after inspecting the flood-affected areas in Gulbarga, he said the damage due to the rains in the eight districts of North Karnataka had been estimated at Rs 400 crore . A total of 54 animals were killed, 22 people lost their lives, 8,800 houses were damaged and crops cultivated on 53,000 hectares of land have been damaged. Gulbarga and Raichur districts have suffered the highest loss, he said.

Crop loss due to deficit rainfall has been reported in a total of nine lakh hectares of land in Kolar, Bangalore Rural, Ramanagar and Bidar districts. The actual report of the crop loss due to heavy and deficient rainfall will come in a couple of days. “I will appeal to the Central government seeking relief in a week’s time,” he said.

Nominations to boards and corporations will be made before the Cabinet expansion. “I am yet to discuss with the high command on creating the deputy chief minister’s post and on Cabinet expansion,” he added.
