Xi may visit Gujarat on India tour

Beijing’s keenness to invest over $5 billion in two industrial parks it will set up in India may see Chinese President Xi Jinping visiting Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s home state Gujarat to catch a glimpse of the fast-paced growth model.

The Gujarat model was a major campaign plank of the BJP in the Lok Sabha polls.Xi is likely to visit India from September 17 to 19 on an invitation from President Pranab Mukherjee. While he will formally meet Mukherjee and Modi in New Delhi, the Chinese president is likely to include either Gujarat or Maharashtra in his itinerary, as Beijing has short-listed locations in the two states for the industrial parks that it would set up in India.

As Chinese Premier Li Keqiang travelled to Mumbai during his visit to India in May 2013, Beijing is understood to be keen on including Ahmedabad in Xi’s itinerary.

A team of officials from Beijing recently travelled to Ahmedabad to assess the logistics for the possible visit. The final decision, however, will be taken during the visit of National Security Advisor Ajit Doval to Beijing early next week.
