The West division police on Sunday arrested seven youths who had kidnapped an 11-year-old boy from Jnanajyothi Nagar in Jnanabharathi police limits on Friday.

An autorickshaw driver who wanted to start a medical store is said to have had masterminded the kidnap to arrange money for his venture.

Based on the information given by the victim Jaikiran, who was rescued on Saturday night, the police arrested the suspects from Kengeri and Jnanabharathi police limits. The arrested are Prashanth, 19, an autorickshaw driver from Kengeri satellite town, and his associates Chetu, Satish, Seena, Mani, Swamy and Suresh.

They are all said to be aged between 18 and 25. The police have also seized a car and two bikes which were used to commit the crime.

The police had formed four special teams and gathered details based on the description about the abductors given by Jaikiran. They also analysed the call records of the abductors who had called the boy’s father Suresh, a building contractor, demanding ransom and tracked a few numbers. The police rushed to the spot and arrested four of them. Based on the information given by those arrested, the rest of them were picked up, police said.

A senior police officer said, “During the interrogation, they revealed that Prashanth wanted to start a medical store and needed money. He knew that Suresh was wealthy and that kidnapping his son would fetch them huge money. He planned the kidnap with his friends and executed it.”

Jaikiran was abducted on Friday evening, while he was returning home from school. As soon as the school van dropped him in front of his house and left, the boy was picked by the abductors and was taken away. The incident came to light when the boy’s mother noticed his schoolbag and lunch box lying on the floor. She called her husband and informed him.

Suresh lodged a complaint at Jnanabharathi police station and later in the night, the abductors called up Suresh and demand a ransom of Rs 80 lakh.

“On Friday, the abductors called up Suresh and asked him to come with the ransom to Nice Road junction on Saturday. The police asked Suresh to tell the abductors that he is ready to pay the ransom. The police formed two special teams to nab the abductors,” said DCP (West) Labhu Ram.

On Saturday, when Suresh went with the ransom, the abductors noticed a few men (policemen) moving around and fled the spot, leaving the child on the road. The police tried to chase them, but they had escaped.
