'State needs Urdu, not Sanskrit varsity'

He said there was more need of an Urdu university in the State than a Sanskrit University. Thousands of students study in Urdu medium. However, there had been no option to study in Sanskrit medium.

The issue came up for debate as Congress member Siddu Nyamagouda urged the government to set up a PU college and a degree college offering courses in Urdu medium in Bijapur and Bagalkot. Education minister Vishweshwara Hegde Kageri said those study in Urdu medium would not get ample job opportunities.

Reacting to the minister’s statement, Congress leader Ugrappa said when the State government was planning to set up a Sanskrit University, why not degree courses could be held in Urdu medium.

Nanaiah, joining the issue, said that Urdu University would have a greater role to play in the state rather than the proposed Sanskrit University. Kageri ended the debate stating the government would take a decision after taking opinions of all members into consideration.

Grants to schools

The State Government has said those private schools and colleges started in 1987-88 with the sanctions from Zilla Panchayats will also get grants. Education minister Vishweshwara Hegde Kageri said the state cabinet would soon take a decision in this regard. He was replying to a calling attention notice raised by Independent member G K Patil in the Council.
