Anandiben cancels campaign for bypoll as rain hits Gujarat

As incessant rains continued to lash various parts of Gujarat on Tuesday, Chief Minister Anandiben Patel has cancelled her campaign programmes for the Lok Sabha by-elections scheduled to be held on Saturday.  

Anandiben held a meeting with officials in Vadodara, and a decision to alert the Army and National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) teams were taken. 

Meanwhile,  the Vishwamitri river in Vadodara is now flowing above the danger mark. The district administration has ordered all schools and colleges to remain closed on Wednesday.  As many as 500 people residing in the low-lying areas of the city were shifted to safer places.

 Officials also said preparations were on for five lakh food packets and school buildings have been identified to meet any emergency. As many as six NDRF teams were sent for rescue in Vaghodia following overflowing of Pipalia village. Officials said that power supply in 125 villages was affected on Tuesday.

Moreover, some areas also lost power supply due to waterlogging in sub-stations.  Vadodara district officials said over 240 medical teams have been instructed to remain on standby to ensure that there is no epidemic post heavy rain, waterlogging and flood-like situation.
