Children studying in schools run by North Corporation have something to cheer about as they will be getting free stitched designer uniforms. The North Delhi Municipal Corporation is planning to distribute the first lot of uniforms by next month.

The North Corporation passed a proposal in its Standing Committee meeting on Wednesday to provide stitched uniforms to around 4.5 lakh kids studying in municipal schools under its jurisdiction.

Providing quality education is one of the main functions of the civic agency, and giving uniforms to kids is the first step in the direction, said Mohan Bhardwaj, Chairman of North Corporation.

A summer uniform comprises a half sleeve shirt and half pant for boys, and a round neck tunic for girls. In winter, boys will be given a full sleeve shirt, trouser and pullover, and girls will get a full sleeve shirt, skirt and pullover.

“It’s for the first time any municipal corporation is giving stitched designer uniforms to kids studying in its schools. And we are hopeful that we can distribute summer uniforms to students in a month’s time,” said North Corporation spokesperson Yogendra Singh Mann. “The winter uniforms will be distributed to school kids by December,” Mann added.

According to the proposal, the total expenditure to purchase stitched uniforms amounts to over Rs 32 crore.

The tender bid have been finalised by the Price Evaluation Committee of north civic agency and shortlisted M/s Mafatlal Industries for supplying the stitched uniforms.

Over 16 lakh shirts and pants will be purchased for boys and the same number of apparels will be bought for girls.

North Corporation Education Committee Chairman Rekha Gupta had selected the designs for the uniforms. At present, the civic agency is paying Rs 500 to each student to purchase summer uniform on their own, and same amount to purchase the winter ones.

In total there are 765 municipal primary schools in the areas under North Corporation’s limits.
