<p>The University Grants Commission (UGC) - Academic Staff College at Manasagangothri, University of Mysore (UoM) premises, will soon be upgraded as a Regional Centre for Capacity Building, for South zone. </p>.<p><br />The college will be among the five institutions in the country, which will be upgraded to Regional Centres.</p>.<p><br />Before upgrading the five Academic Staff Colleges as Regional Centres, the UGC had identified 66 such institutes, located in different varsities of the country. Now, the remaining institutions will be renamed as Human Resource Development Centres. Guidelines for the centres are expected to be implemented from October 1. </p>.<p><br />According to sources, the decision for upgradation was taken at a recent meeting of the directors of Academic Staff Colleges, UGC, and National Assessment and Accreditation Committee (NAAC) officials, at Chandigarh.</p>.<p><br />Under the South zone, comprising Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Andhra Pradesh, there are 18 Academic Staff Colleges, which will now come under the purview of the Regional Centre, to come up at Mysore.</p>.<p><br />Upgradation</p>.<p><br />After the upgradation, non-teaching staff, research scholars and students too will be trained. Earlier, the centres were exclusively conducting refresher courses on various subjects for lecturers and professors. Now, importance will be given for the use of information and communication technologies, in the form of ‘e-learning’, ‘e-teaching’ and ‘e-resource’. The UGC will also sanction funds for the Centre, to install state-of-the-art technology.<br /><br />The UGC-Academic Staff College of the UoM, set up in 1987, has been recognised as one of the best Academic Staff Colleges by the UGC in the past. It was also rated as the fifth best institution in the country by NAAC in 2012.</p>.<p><br />Vice-Chancellor K S Rangappa said, the UGC has granted Rs 2 crore for the development of the college as a Regional Centre. “Efforts will be made to develop it as one of the best centres in the country,” he said.<br /><br /></p>
