<p>While Aadhaar number is not mandatory for an individual to open a bank account under Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana, people without Aadhaar will not be eligible for benefits under various schemes of the government.</p>.<p><br />During the launch of the scheme, an insurance cover of Rs 1 lakh and overdraft facility of Rs 5,000 for account holders was promised. However, people who have not seeded their Aadhaar numbers to bank accounts cannot avail the benefits. So, authorities concerned have been instructed to open Aadhaar enrolment camps wherever necessary. However, the number of such centres are yet to be decided.</p>.<p><br />Speaking to Deccan Herald, Lead Bank manager K N Shivalingaiah said, enrolment camps will be opened soon, after the completion of a survey on the number of families without bank accounts in the district. <br />The survey, he said, is expected to be completed within two weeks, after which data on families without a bank account will be available. <br /><br /><br />Financial inclusion</p>.<p>“If we consider the data of previous financial years, about 60 per cent of the families, or more, have at least one bank account. We are trying to include the remaining families under the financial inclusion programme of the Centre,” he said.</p>.<p><br />Speaking on the survey, he said, sub-service areas have been allotted for banks in rural areas, and wards in urban areas and towns. “The banks will have to identify families without bank accounts in areas allotted to them,” he said.</p>.<p><br /> In the district, a total of 349 sub-service areas, under 235 grama panchayats have been identified.<br />Banking correspondents, numbering 282 in the district, NGOs, self help groups and other agencies will be employed for the survey.</p>.<p><br />New accounts</p>.<p><br />Shivalingaiah said, the Lead Bank is yet to collate the data of the number of new accounts, under the scheme, opened in different parts of the district. However, he said, about 46,000 accounts have been opened under the scheme since August 16. <br /><br />“Even though the scheme was officially launched on August 28, ground work had started since August 16,” he said.</p>.<p><br />Improvement</p>.<p><br />A representative of an Aadhaar enrolment firm, who did not wish to be named, said, Aadhaar enrolment has increased in the past two weeks, following the launch of the scheme. “Since, Aadhaar is mandatory for the scheme, enrolment figures have improved, especially in rural areas,” the representative said.<br />On whether new Aadhaar enrolment centres would be opened, he said, they were yet to receive communication regarding the same from authorities.<br /></p>
