State Cong plans grand Gandhi Jayanti

Last Updated 12 September 2014, 19:54 IST

The State Congress has decided to scale up the Gandhi Jayanti celebrations on October 2, this time. This is being planned to counter the Godse policies being ‘propagated’ at the national level.

A decision to celebrate Gandhi Jayanti on a grand scale was taken at the office-bearers’ meeting held here on Thursday.

Congress general secretary B L Shankar said that instructions would be given to district presidents to organise the Jayanti on a grand scale.

“The policies of (Nathuram) Godse are being appreciated and adored at the national level. But, can we forget the preachings of Mahatma Gandhi,” he asked. Godse is Gandhi’s assassin.

On October 2, the party would also launch a membership drive across the State. The party would also celebrate late prime minister Indira Gandhi’s birth anniversary on November 19 in a big way, he added.

The meeting discussed at length the preparations to be made for the Gram Panchayat elections next March. The party has no units at the GP level. Hence, it has been decided to form a committee of 25 members at every GP level. There are 5,626 GPs going to polls. The polls are fought without party symbols.

The party decided to request Chief Minister Siddaramaiah to send a minister to flood-hit Jammu and Kashmir to co-ordinate rescue operations of people from Karnataka.

Other decisions taken at the meeting are: to set up an advisory committee for deciding the preparations for the forthcoming BBMP elections and to request the government to seek the Centre’s help for a joint inspection of flood-hit districts.

The executive committee meeting of the party will be held on September 20 in Bangalore to discuss the preparations for the forthcoming elections and also review the membership drive.

Digvijaya Singh, in charge of party affairs in Karnataka, is scheduled to attend the meeting. Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, the party MPs from the State, the ministers among others will attend the meet.
