Modi to have a full plate in Gujarat

Narendra Modi, who will turn 64 on Wednesday, has a packed itinerary for his maiden visit to Gujarat after becoming prime minister.

During his two-day visit to his home state beginning on Tuesday, the prime minister will go to Gandhinagar to meet his 94-year-old mother Hiraba, who is preparing special sweets for his birthday, attend a grand welcoming ceremony arranged for him and BJP president Amit Shah and even hold talks with China President Xi Jiping.

Modi’s felicitation function in Gandhinagar on Tuesday will see the attendance of Gujarat Chief Minister Anandiben Patel and her Cabinet, BJP office-bearers, parliamentarians, legislators and municipal councillors from Ahmedabad, Surat, Rajkot and Vadodara, as well as presidents of district panchayats.

Modi and Shah are arriving in Gujarat on the day the results of the by-elections to 33 Assembly seats and three Lok Sabha seats will be announced. In Gujarat alone, bypolls were held for 10 seats, including the two vacated by Modi as Maninagar MLA and Vadodara MP.

The grandeur with which the welcoming ceremony has been planned for the two leaders indicates the confidence of the BJP in retaining all 10 seats in the state. Both Shah and Modi are expected to arrive on Tuesday evening and address the youth wing of the BJP at the airport and a public meeting in Gandhinagar.

Meanwhile, Gujarat Chief Minister Anandiben Patel, for whom the state by-election results are a litmus test and a chance to prove herself as the right successor to Modi, is personally overseeing all the arrangements.
The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation is reportedly spending a whopping Rs 10 crore to spruce up the city ahead of the high-profile visits. The China president and his wife are expected to arrive in Gujarat on Wednesday.
