Sex worker's son cuts music album

For 25-year-old Ratan Dolui, the son of a sex worker, it was a dream to cut a music album dedicated to his deceased mother who had wanted him to become a singer.

"Nijhum Rater Tara", a collection of 10 Bengali modern songs, was released on September 25 by famous pop singer Usha Uthup. It was produced by Kaya Music.

"My mother Rachana Dolui has always dreamt that I will become a big singer one day and she bore all the hardship in her life to train me as a singer," Ratan told PTI.

According to Ratan, his mother, who had passed away at the age of 46 in 2010 due to brain tumour, had hereslf wanted to become a singer, but circumstances forced her into the flesh trade.

Ratan has formed a band of 10 people which sings in the pubs and various functions across the city earning a decent living.

The officials Durbar Mahila Samanwaya Committee (DMSC), a forum of 1,30,000 sex workers in West Bengal, were elated at Ratan's 'feat'.

"We are very happy for Ratan. His struggle will act as a inspiration for hundreds of other children who are born to sex workers and face a lot of hardship," said an official of Durbar.

During intial stages, Durbar had helped Ratan with funds to buy equipments and set up his own band.

Ratan who also teaches music to several other children of sex workers said that he would donate the proceeds from the sale of the album to the benifit of the kids in the Sonagachi area, the biggest red light area of Asia.
