Committee to fix fares for private stage carriages

The Transport department has formed a committee under the chairmanship of Additional Transport Secretary and Secretary, STA, Bangalore, for fixing fares for the stage carriages.

The committee, headed by H G Kumar, comprises joint commissioner and RTO officials. It will, within 20 days’ time, submit its report to the Transport minister after duly considering the issues flagged by private bus operators and will fix the minimum and maximum fares for stage carriages. Presently, the minimum and maximum fares are fixed by the government for contract carriages.

Transport Minister Ramalinga Reddy said that an official committee has been formed for regulating the fares in stage carrier private buses as it has been done in case of Contract carriages as per the Karnataka State Contract Carriages Act.

“I have taken note of the steep hike, close to two to three times the fare which is levied by KSRTC. This year we will be unable to control the fare hike during festival season. But from next year we will have the amended rules in place for the purpose of regulating the fares in the State,” he said.

The private operators had claimed that due to festival season they had to ply extra buses. Officials said that after meeting private operators, a decision will be made, keeping in mind the hike in diesel price, increase in operational cost and other factors.
