Committee against land-grabbing threatens hunger strike

The Action Committee against Land Grabbing has threatened to launch a fast-unto-death on Monday condemning the “inaction” of the government in protecting public property.

Freedom fighter H S Doreswamy, who has been staging a dharna near Town Hall against land-grabbing, said that he would launch the hunger strike if the government did not initiate action against land-grabbers.

“Since the government has failed to take action, we have decided to intensify our fight by launching hunger strike,” Doreswamy said.

Describing the Revenue Department as the most corrupt department in Karnataka, he said that the committee activists will begin visiting specific offices of Revenue Department starting Tuesday to question the top officials on specific cases based on A T Ramaswamy Report.“We won’t stop until we get satisfactory responses,” Doreswamy added.

A T Ramaswamy, former legislator, sought to the reluctance on the part of the government taking action even in a single case of land grabbing.

He said that the cases listed in the Ramaswamy Joint Legislature Committee on Encroachments in Bangalore Urban District, 2007, were only the tip of an iceberg and it was the government’s responsibility to unearth thousands of other land grabbing cases in and around Bangalore alone.
