CPI calls for stir against price hike

Need for mass movement: CPI General Secretary A B Bardhan addressing a public meeting at Freedom Park in Bangalore on Saturday. DH PhotoAddressing a public meeting at Freedom Park in the City on Saturday Bardhan appealed to JD(S) and like-minded parties to join hands against the UPA at the Centre and the BJP in the State (Karnataka). “They have supported free market economy to satisfy the corporates,” he charged. “I will meet Deve Gowda and ask him to lead this campaign against rise in prices and demand measures to help farmers and the working class,” he stressed.

The Centre has neither enacted the Food Security Bill, Essential Commodities Act nor ensured a proper Public Distribution System all over the country, he alleged. Drawing upon the welfare measure implemented in Tamil Nadu, Bardhan said that the State government there had ensured supply of 25 kilograms per family each month at the cost of Rs 1 per kg.

Govt will collapse
Accusing Chief Minister Yeddyurappa of ignoring people’s welfare and neglecting flood-ravaged victims in the northern Karnataka, the General Secretary warned that the mining lobby and money power would not be able to save the BJP government.  He cautioned that even ten Janardhan Reddys cannot save this State government and said that its fall was imminent.

MP Gurudas Dasgupta said that the Left would call for a Bharat Bandh in February or March against price hike. “We will also organise a jail bharo programme on March 4 against hike in prices and to secure the welfare of farmers,” he added.
The CPI will be organising its National Council Meet in the City for three days.
