'Fatwas' against Chinese, Israeli products

Last Updated 06 October 2014, 19:35 IST

While Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been trying to foster business relations with China and Israel, two prominent Muslim clerics here on Monday virtually issued “fatwas” (religious decree) against using Chinese and Israeli products.

Prominent Sunni cleric and member of the All India Muslim Law Board , the apex body of Muslims in the country, Maulana Khalid Rashid Firangimahali said here in his speech after the special Id prayers at the historic Idgah that China had been “violating” the Line of Actual Control.

“It is our duty to encourage the morale of our troops,”  the cleric said. “By boycotting Chinese goods, we would be reiterating our support to jawans.”

Firangimahali also said the Chinese products had ruined small scale industries. “Chinese toys and other products have invaded our markets...they have adversely impacted our small entrepreneurs,” he said.

The cleric said the boycott of the Chinese goods would ‘mount pressure’ on the neighbouring country and  might stop it from violating our borders every now and then.
