Foundation gives 67 scholarships worth Rs 19 lakh this year

Roopa D was studying in I PU when her father passed away, leaving the family in distress. “I somehow managed to finish my II PU with the help of a relative,” she said.

She was about to give up her dream of becoming an engineer when a friend told her about a scholarship scheme offered by a trust, Foundation For Excellence (FFE) India.

Now, in her final year at the University Visvesvaraya College of Engineering (UVCE), Roopa has already been placed at a well-known multinational electronics company where she will work from next year after finishing her degree. “My studies at the UVCE were sponsored by the Trust. Now, my sister, who also aspires to be an engineer, will apply for the scholarship,” she said.

An open house meeting of all stakeholders of the Trust, including sponsors, beneficiaries like Roopa and alumni of the scholarship scheme was held in the City recently.

As many as 67 scholarships worth Rs 19 lakh were formally given to students for this year at the meeting.

Over the past 20 years, 1,724 students in the State have received the scholarships. The scholarship is given to students interested in pursuing engineering or medicine, but lack financial resources.

Prakash R H, a project manager with engineering firm Bosch, was one of the recipients of the scholarship in 2002, when he was studying engineering at a college in the City. Hailing from Dharwad, Prakash is a member of the board in the Trust and helps other students. “Along with the money, it also gives students a chance to network and connect with others who have benefited from the scheme,” said Prakash.

M V Rajeev Gowda, Rajya Sabha member and Ravi Venkatesan, former Chairman of Microsoft, India, were present.
