Last Updated 13 October 2014, 20:03 IST

In their eagerness to get clicked by photojournalists, several Uttar Pradesh Congress leaders suffered burns at an agitation by the party over payment of cane arrears to farmers in Meerut on Monday.

Reports said scores of Congress workers led by their local district leaders had laid siege to the commissioner’s office in Meerut in protest against failure of the sugar mills to clear the arrears.

The workers also submitted a memorandum to the commissioner. On their way back, some of the workers who were carrying bunches of sugarcane burnt them to register protest.
Some photojournalists present there started to click snaps of the burning cane. This saw a sort of competition among the leaders and workers to get themselves clicked, sources said.

There was a sort of stampede as the leaders jostled with each other to get near the burning cane. In the melee, some leaders fell over the burning cane and suffered injuries. They included city Congress president Vinay Pradhan and  president of the city women’s Congress wing Prema Sharma.

They were rushed to district hospital, sources said. Fortunately the injuries were not major and were discharged later.
