The State Cabinet has decided to appoint retired IAS officer P N Srinivasachari as the commissioner of the State Election Commission. The post has been vacant since the retirement of C R Chikmath on June 23.

The decision of the Cabinet was announced by Law Minister T B Jayachandra at a press conference here on Thursday. The decision has to be now approved by the governor, according to official sources. The quasi judicial post, equivalent to that of a high court judge, can be held for five years by a person who is not older than 65 years of age.

Srinivasachari retired as an IAS officer in July.

At the time of retirement, he was the principal secretary of the Transport department. He had served in various departments, including Urban Development.

The State Election Commission will soon gear up for elections to the local bodies and the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike.
