No foul play in solar power project, says DKS

Energy Minister D K Shivakumar justified the solar energy tendering process by stating that there was no scam in it.

“I am no fool to get caught in a scam. All the tenders have been awarded to land owners who are farmers by profession. Let there be an inquiry into this by any agency, there is no foul play,” he said.

The minister said the entire solar power project was envisaged with the hope that farmers who are unable to grow crops can utilise their land for generating power. “I wanted the farmers to know that their land is worth something, and that it need not be sold,” he said.

The minister said that it was primarily those who applied from the Nemmadi Kendras who were able to submit the applications.

“The Nemmadi Kendra personnel, adept with typing government documents, were the fastest. All those who applied through the Nemmadi Kendras secured the tenders. I even asked several of my Cabinet colleagues to apply for tenders, but none did. One BJP MP and one MLA from Congress have received the tenders,” he said.

Shivakumar attacked the failure of the previous governments in conducting proper tendering process for wind energy, wherein tenders were called for 12,000 MW but only 2,000 MW of power was sought for by the farmers.

Speaking on Surya Raitha scheme, Shivakumar said that his department had envisaged the scheme for generating power from farmers during their lean days of farming.

“A farmer can grow crops for 200 days, and in the remaining 165 days, he can utilise his land for generating power.

“We are ready to buy the power from farmers at Rs 9.56 per unit, so that they can make a living during the lean days of farming,” he said.
