Missing records add to confusion

The organisers of the All India inter-university swimming championship are facing a peculiar problem on a daily basis with no updated list of meet records in their possession from the previous meet.

Swimmers have been credited with meet records after comparing their performances with the competition held two years ago (2012) in Kolkata, as no list of records from the 2013 edition, organised by the Guru Nanak Dev University (GNDU) in Amritsar, exists with the Association of Indian Universities, the apex body.

“We tried hard to get all possible records from the AIU and from the Guru Nanak University, but all our efforts fell on deaf ears. This is the reason why we are forced to compare the meet’s timings here with the Kolkata meet to decide on new ‘meet records’,” said Shankar, Director of Sports, Jain University, the hosts of the 2014 edition.

The Jain University have obtained the 2012 list directly from the organisers of the Kolkata meet.

However, GNDU rejected the charge, stating that they did hand over the 2013 records to the Association of Indian Universities.

“(When we hosted) we received only the results from the previous meet (2012). Regarding the records that were created during that meet, we received nothing from the AIU,” said HS Randhawa, Deputy Director of Sports, Guru Nanak Dev University.

“We made sure that all the documents, including the records (of 2013 edition), were handed to the AIU as per the procedure,” Randhawa remarked. The AIU officials were not available for comment.
