Strongly opposing the Centre’s proposal to introduce Road Transport and Safety Bill 2014, Tamil Nadu on Tuesday said that the new measure “erodes and encroaches” upon the powers of the state government.

State Transport Minister Senthil Balaji claimed that as per the new Bill, the state cannot implement its well-planned welfare schemes without having the approval of National Transport authority. “Hence this Bill seriously encroaches on the legislating competence of the states", he said.

Stating that the Bill makes serious inroads into  powers of the state government, the minister said “all fees, fines, compounding fee, motor vehicle tax will be levied and collected by the National Authority by electronic platform and out of the revenue so collected in the whole country only a meager amount will be apportioned to the states”.
