In what may affect the daily collection and disposal of waste in the city in the coming days, 99 contract drivers of Mysore City Corporation (MCC) on Wednesday launched an indefinite stir in front of the main corporation office, on New Sayyaji Rao road in the city.

As the contractor failed to keep his promise to settle the salary dues, the drivers of auto tippers and dumper lorries deployed on waste collection and disposal from different localities, sat on a stir in front of the city corporation, boycotting their job of collection and disposal of waste for the day.

The agitation that lasted eight hours, started at 8 am with the drivers parking their vehicles near the site of protest. Corporator H S Nandeesh Preetham who has joined the drivers in their stir, also barged into the business advisory committee meeting at the old council hall, at MCC, seeking the intervention of Mayor R Lingappa, Commissioner C G Betsurmath, but in vain.

They decided to continue with their stir, on Thursday too till their demands are met.

According to a memorandum issued by the protesters, B V Manjunath the contractor failed to remit the salaries on Monday (October 27), as per the commitment made by him during the protest held on October 25.

Apart from keeping the salaries due, he is found to have flouted the norm of directorate of municipal administration (DMA) issued on April 1, 2014. According to the norm, the drivers have to be paid a salary of Rs 8,082 (Rs 268 per day, after deducting towards PF and ESI facilities).

Sources told Deccan Herald, Venkatesh was deliberately delaying payment the salaries, as the period of his contract has ended. The new contract has been bagged by three others.

MCC Commissioner C G Betsurmath said that MCC was making alternative arrangements to keep the service (on waste collection and disposal) uninterrupted, if the situation persisted.
