Upadhyay to pick by-poll nominees

Last Updated 02 November 2014, 03:13 IST

The Delhi BJP election committee authorised city unit chief Satish Upadhyay and two other leaders to name candidates for the November 25 by-poll on three Assembly seats.

The announcement came amid rumours of differences within the party over the names of some candidates.

Upadhyay, who is tipped to contest the by-poll from Mehrauli, said the names of the three candidates may be announced on Monday or Tuesday.

Without revealing detail about the meeting held in Delhi BJP for preparations of the by-poll, Delhi in-charge and MP Prabhat Jha said: “All members of the committee have authorised Satish Upadhyay, general secretary Vijay Sharma and me to take a decision.”

Jha said the main contest in these by-elections will be between BJP and the Congress.

“The Aam Aadmi Party was a momentary product of a movement and the people of Delhi have seen and understood the incompetence of the AAP leadership during the last one year,”Jha said.

“This by-election will end all the illusions about the popularity of the AAP,” he said.
Meanwhile, sources in the BJP said there were some differences within the party on the possible candidature of Upadhyay from Mehrauli seat.

“Some leaders from the constituency are not coming on board to let Upadhyay contest the Mehrauli by-election,” said a BJP leader.

The Delhi BJP on Friday launched its preparations for the campaign in three by-polls seats by organising workers’ conventions.

The three seats fell vacant when BJP’s legislators Harsh Vardhan (Krishna Nagar), Ramesh Bidhuri (Tughlakabad) and Pervesh Verma (Mehrauli) were elected to Lok Sabha in May. Even after four days of the start of the process for filing nominations, not a single candidate has filed his or her papers till Saturday.

The by-polls have been notified by the Election Department at a time when a petition on the dissolution of the hung Assembly is pending in the Supreme Court.
