Speed up site allocation process to poor, Rai tells officials

KDP meet also discusses issues on airport runway extension, sand mafia and Shiradi ghat repair

Minister for Forest, Environment, and Ecology B Ramanath Rai has directed the revenue officials to speed up the process of site distribution to poor in the district and asked to find at least two acres of land in every villlage for the purpose.

Speaking at the Dakshina Kannada Zilla Panchayath quarterly KDP meeting, at Netravathi Auditorium of the Zilla Panchayat here on Monday, he said that the delay in distribution of sites leads to encroachment of government as well as forest land. If no government land is available for sites, private land can be purchased.

The Deputy Commissioner should convene a special meeting regarding the issue and give directions to all tahsildars, he said.  

Minister for Health and Family Welfare U T Khader stressed on earmarking land for public utility services. Meanwhile, Zilla Panchayat Vice President Satish Kumpala expressed disappointment that the government had earmarked 4.33 acres of land at Konaje village to distribute sites for poor, but it withdrew the order within three months. Khader ordered the tahsildar to find any alternative land.

Superintendent of Police Dr Sharanappa requested the District-in-Charge Minister to provide a site to build a traffic police station at Bantwal. “We need a site beside the main road with enough space to park vehicles. But, the tahsildar and police couldn’t find any,” he said. Ramanath Rai said that traffic problem is bit serious in Bantwal and directed the tahsildar to solve the problem at the earliest.

Runway extension by March

About the approach road work to Mangalore International Airport, Assistant Commissioner Ashok said that M/s Concord Construction company has started the work. For the extension of the runway, land acquisition process has been started.

In total, 185 acres of land will be acquired and Rs 115 crore will be spent for the acquisition, and Rs 6 crore for rehabilitation. The proposal has been sent to the government and work would finish by March, 2015, he said.

‘Stop sand mafia’   
Zilla Panchayat President Asha Timmappa Gowda and members were unhappy that officials are following dual stand regarding sand mining in the district. The officials stop sand transporters within the state and slap fine, but they don’t take action against inter-state sand mafia, they alleged. Minister U T Khader took officials to task and ordered to set up check posts wherever necessary. Law should be the same for all and sand transportation to Kerala should be stopped.

About the rehabilitation of Endosulfan victims, DHO Shivakumar said that a monthly pension of Rs 40 lakh is being given to 4,500 victims in the district. To provide shelter, Rs 3.40 crore has been spent from last March.

ZP President Asha Timmappa Gowda demanded that other rehabilitation centres should also be developed like Koila centre. Meanwhile, U T Khader directed the DHO to send separate proposal for the purpose and directed him not to use the pension fund.
Shiradi: Meet on Nov 17

Ramanath Rai said that a meeting will be convened on the development of Shiradi Ghat road on November 17 and the date for the ground breaking ceremony for the road development work will be announced on the day, he said. Deputy Commissioner A B Ibrahim said that five alternative roads- Mani- Sampaje, Madikeri, Charmadi, Udupi-Agumbe ghat and Honnavar routes will be used till the construction work ends.

On renovation of Jeppu Fish Market, MLC Ivan D’Souza said that no market has been developed from past few years. Ramanath Rai directed the officials to develop the market at the earliest using Rs 92 lakh released by National Fisheries Development Board. If the money is not enough, the department can demand additional funds, he said.

About providing house number for poor who have constructed houses on government land in MCC limits, Minister U T Khader directed MCC Additional Commissioner Gokuldas Naik to issue no objection certificate which is enough to get electricity connection and ration card.

Youth Services, Sports and Fisheries Minister K Abhaychandra Jain, ZP Chief Executive Officer Tulasi Maddineni and MLA Mohiuddin Bava among others were present.
